Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is home to the Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies. HRI earned first place in the Bi-National category of the 2006 Gulf Guardian Awards sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency to honor outstanding projects related to the conservation of the Gulf of Mexico. HRI’s mission is to support and advance the long-term sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf of Mexico. The institute encourages a tri-national approach, including the United States, Mexico, and Cuba, and promotes excellence and innovation in interdisciplinary scientific research, public policy initiatives, and education of the public
