Whitetail DeerWith a large population of whitetail deer, it is one of the most popular game hunting animals in the region. The brush country of South Texas is well-known for its whitetail Bucks attracting the most avid hunter. The whitetail deer is recognized by and large for the white underside of the tail. Usually, when the deer is alarmed, it will raise its tail to show the white underside. A deer's coat is a tan-brown in the spring and summer, and then turns to a grey-brown in the fall and winter. The male whitetail deer is known as a "buck" and is easily recognized by his antlers, while the female deer is referred to as a "doe." There are various methods to hunting whitetail deer, but one of the most popular methods in South Texas is to hunt from a blind hidden in a tree stand or in the brush line. Some game ranches have the hunter sit in a stand above the ground, and above the line of sight of the deer. The blind reduces the chance of detection from a deer. Hunting seasons vary by county so be sure to check the Texas Parks & Wildlife Outdoor Annual for season dates and limits. |
