5 New Species You’ll Meet at the Texas State Aquarium

Sharks, flamingos and sloths - OH MY! The new Caribbean Journey wing of the Texas State Aquarium takes you through the Sian Ka’an Biosphere and into the Caribbean Sea. Here’s a peek at some of the new species that you'll meet in the Caribbean Journey at the Texas State Aquarium.

Flamingos

You almost can’t take your eyes off these perfectly pink birds. Get your camera ready, the flock of Caribbean Flamingos are like the greeting crew in the new Texas State Aquarium expansion. Their stilt-like legs and long necks are statuesque but exciting all at the same time.

Keel-billed Toucan

You don’t have to travel all the way to the Yucatan Peninsula to see a Keel-billed Toucan. Come visit Lola the Toucan at the Texas State Aquarium anytime. She won’t be hard to spot…her distinctive colorful and long beak will be the giveaway.

Sloth

Yes, you read that right. See a sloth at the Texas State Aquarium. Xena the Linnaeus’s Two-toed Sloth hangs out in the trees of the jungle. Sloths are typically slow-moving, so once you get a glimpse of Xena, you won’t be able to take your eyes off her.

Fun Fact: most of the trees and plants in the Caribbean Journey jungle are indigenous to the Yucatan Peninsula, so the animals can truly feel at home!

Balloon Fish

Similar to a puffer fish, this Balloon Fish is an almost-hidden gem in the Caribbean Journey. While bulgy eyes and a spiky surface may not seem like fun, these features make this fish too cute to pass up. Look for him in the Coral Reef exhibit…he could be down below or waiting for you at the overlook in the jungle.

Queen Angelfish

There are so many colors swimming in the Coral Reef Exhibit, but none brighter than the Queen Angelfish. The striking blue fins and bright yellow tail are mesmerizing!
