5 Questions with Jeanie Goff, Concierge, Port Royal Ocean Resort
Meet Jeanie Goff, the effervescent concierge at Port Royal Ocean Resort in Port Aransas, Texas. She's been with the Port A resort for almost a decade. Her adorable promo videos for the resort are the stuff of ... well, at least local legend. She even has her own hashtag (#dreamwithjeanie). Let's find out a little more about Jeanie and her role!
You've said your job at Port Royal doesn't even feel like a job?
I greet guests as they arrive and get to hear all their life stories. It's so much fun making them feel welcome and learning about what makes them tick. I guess you could say it's a job, but to me, it doesn't feel like work!
Are you originally from Texas; what other jobs have you had?
I'm an Okie girl from Oklahoma. When I was in high school, I started modeling at women’s luncheons at department stores. They’d host fashion shows to show off the latest styles. And no, I did not get to keep the clothes!
Later I had a real estate brokerage in California, but when the bottom fell out in 1997, I went to work as a bartender. My husband and I wanted to leave the West Coast, so we traveled in an RV for a year and a half.
We moved to Port A 16 years ago and adore it. We made so many friends on our journey. They can't believe we get to live on the water.
What are your favorite parts of your job?
I have to know all about the Coastal Bend. As concierge, I get a lot of questions. A lot are about fishing boats, then spas, shops, malls and attractions. Best of all, I love seeing the look on people's faces when they first see our pool and realize how big it is. I think we have the best-kept secret here at Port Royal.
You have to relate to all kinds of people, all walks of life, all ages. Has that ever presented problems?
No, not really! We were doing a photo shoot here at Port Royal, and some high school kids were playing volleyball in one of the pools. I checked with my boss first, then went over to the kids and asked if it would be all right if I played volleyball. They were very sweet and said, "Yeah! Yeah!" So I put on my bathing suit and got in the water. I went under the net to get on the other side, and this young man picks me up and spins me around – just having a ball! And yes, there are pictures and video, so people will not let me forget about this! (laughter)
What are your secrets for good livin'?
Move to Port Aransas, and get a job at Port Royal! Honestly, it's no secret: The best thing is living on the water, waking up in my jammies, looking out on the ocean and getting ready to start the day … How much better can that be? I couldn't be happier.
