Recovery Stories - Hurricane Harvey: USS Lexington
When looking at the impressive World War II aircraft carrier nestled along North Beach in Corpus Christi, one wonders what a massive undertaking it must be to move the carefully arranged aircraft sitting on its flight deck if a major storm arrived.
Actually, once the team at the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay made the decision to put their heavy weather plan into action as Hurricane Harvey approached, it took employees only a matter of hours to secure the museum’s entire collection inside the ship.
That is because the USS Lexington still operates a working aircraft elevator used to move exhibits from the flight deck to the hangar deck, according to F.W. “Rocco” Montesano, the museum’s executive director.
During the storm, Montesano and a small crew remained at the Lexington to maintain the ship and its exhibits. The Lexington also housed first responders from the Coast Guard and FEMA.
The USS Lexington Museum on the Bay is located at 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd. The aircraft are back on display on the flight deck and Montesano hopes to see many visitors in the coming months.
