Running of the Bulls - A Redfish Journey

What is it about fall that some consider the best time for outdoors in the Coastal Bend? Is it the cooling temperatures, football, hunting or the potential for hearing your reel scream from copious amounts of line being pulled through the water?

During the months of September and October the surf, bays and piers start seeing more catches of redfish (red drum) in the upper 20 to 40 inch (and above) range. Caught on natural and artificial baits, these fish can provide a fight that lasts several minutes and tests the skills of the most seasoned anglers.

Does the thought of this adventure have you wondering where to go, yet? Bob Hall Pier stretches into the Gulf of Mexico, providing deeper water and sand bars for migrating and spawning fish. Bait stands/piers, such as Clem’s Marina and Marker-37 provide more central locations with access to the Gulf of Mexico through Packery Channel.

New to this and ready to try it out? Here are a few things you will need:

  • Fishing license with saltwater endorsement
  • Rod and reel (some bait stands/piers offer these for a rental fee)
  • Bait (no fishing on credit!)
  • Camera (memories to last a lifetime!)
  • Sunscreen if you’ll be fishing on a sunny day
  • Chairs for comfort
  • Refreshments
  • Snacks

 

What do you do after you catch your oversized redfish? Well, most people photograph and release them back into the wild to reproduce for future generations. However, you are permitted to keep one of these at the time of writing this article, granted you have an oversized redfish tag from Texas Parks and Wildlife. While you can eat them, most people prefer the slot-sized (20”-28”) for table fare.
